Types of Music Video Research - Kieran Panchal 9652

Narrative Based

Narrative - The way that a story or structure is told in a way that it makes sense to the audience. It has also been defined as the way events are unified in time and space.
In terms of music video productions, this is when a music video is very plot-driven, using narrative and story telling to create an engagement with the audience, as they are more thematic in their approach. Usually, the narrative used relates to the lyrics or genre of the song, which further enhances the experiences for the audience. It should also be noted that music videos often don't contain complete narratives and often resist ones that are completely realistic and classic, containing a beginning, middle and end.

Narrative in music video often work similarly to film in that they follow Toderov's equilibrium structure, beginning with an exposition that introduces a character, followed by a disequilibrium and finally a denouement where the conflict/disequilibrium is resolved.

Types of narrative music videos:

  • Illustration - this is where the narrative in the music video very closely reflects the lyrical content of the song
  • Amplification - The narrative may be slightly influenced by the lyrical content, however, it uses different themes to compliment the emotion and feeling of the song.
  • Disjuncture - This is where the narrative holds very little relationship to the song, and often can be very arbitrary.

Performance Based

Performance based music videos usually include the artist of a song, and are based around watching the artist perform to the song to the camera/audience. This style of music video is very common amongst high energy, particularly rock music, as it allows the energy and atmosphere from the performance to be transferred to the audience, creating a more intense and immersive viewing experience, which can emulate the audience seeing the artist play live. The costing on this type of production is also most likely to be the lowest whilst the producers are giving the audience the most realistic image of the band as it is only the band they are showing. The downside of this is that the band will need to be relatively established to pull off the video, or else interest may become saturated unless there is some form of narrative or concept also shown in the video, creating a hybrid music video category.

Concept

Concept music videos are usually based around a single idea or or concept. Often they have little narrative relevance, and are very niché and art-based, involving unusual content in order to create a sense of surrealism or escapism for the audience. This type of music video can be used for any music genre, however it is most commonly associated with less conventional/popular music, particularly songs with ambient and experimental elements. The unusual theme of the video content usually attracts an audience and is engaging due its niche aesthetic.

Music Video Song Ideas - Kieran Panchal 9652

Sigur Ros - Festival

If i were to create a music video for this song, I should base my film around a naked Scandinavian man who enters an industrial, large empty room setting. He walks in and finds a drum kit in the centre of the room. He sits down and plays the kit intensively and passionately.

Possible Trailer Ideas - Kieran Panchal 9652

War

A deep-voiced man begins to talk to the audience about the deterioration of society against a black screen. After around 30 seconds of speech, the black fades out, presenting a homeless man on the street. He holds a sign asking for money from passers by and is getting ignored . The remainder of the trailer consists of several short 2-3 second flashbacks (montage style) of the man from years before in combat.

Drama

The trailer would begin set in a hospital room scene. A young male character lays unconscious in bed. There are a variety of interesting close up and extreme close up shots of the patient's body parts and medical equipment around him, with the sound of a life support machine beeping in the background. The character in bed provides a narration during this outlining his story. At the end of the trailer, his face is shown for the first time with his eyes open.

Adventure

The idea of the trailer would be to show the adventure of a lost dog. Each of the shots would show the dog wandering in a different place, i.e through a city, through rural areas. The soundtrack would be soft and would build up until the dog walks through a front door to see his family in the final shot.

Why I chose to discount creating a trailer

My main reason for choosing to discount creating a trailer is because generally, the nature of trailers means that it will not allow to create a continuous narrative piece. As previously mentioned, my prefferred method of video production involves creating emotional connections with the characters. From my research, i found that most trailers are edited in montage style in order to give a greater overview of the entire film. Doing this would not allow for me to create a sustained engagement with my audience, as there would be too much enigma code to make sense out of the narrative.

Advert Ideas - Kieran Panchal 9652

Dental Awareness Advert

GoPro Hero Session 4 in the back of a patients wide open mouth that's sitting in a dental chair. The wide angle nature of the lens means that the patients' rotting teeth will be in shot. The dentists will be in shot, performing a dental procedure on the patient, whilst the patient struggles and whines in pain. When the pain gets too much for the patient, they instinctively bite down on the dentist's tools, naturally presenting a black screen as their mouth closes. There will be a strap line appearing on the black screen promoting good dental care.

Alcohol Consumption Advert

The scene would be set in a hectic operating theatre. A patient is rushed in on a hospital bed as the hospital staff begin to frantically rush around the room. The majority of the advert will be filmed in first person point of view, with cameras strapped to the patient in different areas. The idea of this would be to make the viewer feel as though they are in the position on the patient. The pace of editing is very fast, and the soundtrack is very unnerving. Towards the end of the advert, the vision and sound becomes distorted before cutting to black and hearing the monotonous bleep of the life support machine  cutting out.

Sports/Football (Nike?)

The advert would follow a player on an 11-a-side football pitch single-handedly running from one side of the pitch to another. Throughout the advert, the only thing in shot is the footballer's boots with the ball at his side, dribbling and doing skills. whilst running around players to the other side of the pitch. The shots will be taken from different angles around the player's feet but would ensure to only include his feet and the ball in the composition. In the background, we can hear professional commentary, flashing cameras and the sounds of crowds screaming when the player shoots and scores, leading the audience to believe that the player is playing in a professional setting, until the final shot shows him playing in his garden and with his opposition being small children.

Why I've discounted producing an advert

In my opinion producing a media text with the main purpose to persuade an audience, generally allows for less opportunity to create a narrative which would in turn create a strong emotional attachment with the audience. From my research of television advertisements, the majority of texts are not based around single, chronological narratives, but instead are montages, focussing primarily on pushing a product upon the audience, rather than telling a story to the audience. Although there are many types of adverts that do allow this, I feel that creating a plot-driven music video would give me more opportunity to connect with the audience, taking them on a journey through story-telling, creating a greater emotional reaction when my product is watched.

Music Video Ideas - Kieran Panchal 9652

Song: Festival - Sigur Rós

Synopsis
  • Setting: Large, empty, industrial room/warehouse, set in a desolate (post-apocalyptic?) world
  • Character: Male, 20, ragged/dirty aesthetic, weak/skinny
  • Mise-en-scene: Low key lighting, general gritty feel, Colour grade: tungstens/oranges
  • Props: Drum kit, cigarettes

General plot:

In a desolate and empty post-apocalyptic world, a lifeless vagrant male finds himself in a large industrial warehouse - a place where he can escape from his life situation to play music. As the music begins to fade in the pace of editing will be very slow, as the character begins to explore the location/ walk into the centre of the room (drone shots)/ long slow tracking/dolly shots establishing location.

In the centre is his drum kit, he sits down and begins to prepare himself to drum - the only thing that keeps him going. The music starts slow and he drums in time to it, getting into the swing of the build up and becoming more full of life and energetic as he drums. As the music builds up and reaches its climax, so does he, and we can see his passion for playing as he sweats and bleeds, destroying his kit and letting nothing prevent him from continuing.

pros/cons

Song: Collider - Jon Hopkins

Synopsis

  • Setting: Boxing ring/ urban street location
  • Character: Two large sweaty males, heavy make up - scarring/contact lenses/teeth grills/ piercings/ hooded
  • Mise-en-scene: Very dark, intense beam lighting
  • Props: Blood, Boxing gloves
Two large men hooded men (shadowed faces) walk into an open low-lit industrial, before entering a boxing ring together from either end. There are lots of cuts to black, and the pace of editing starts fast, with the lots of interesting extreme close up shots being shown on screen. As the music continues at a slower pace, the two meet in the middle of the ring,  looking into each others eyes and growling. As the beat kicks in, the men remove their hoods, exposing their faces and begin to fight, becoming more aggressive as the music tempo increases.

The majority of the fight scene will be in slow motion, with long circling camera movements and interesting extreme close ups being used frequently throughout, showing their worn faces in particular detail. At the end of the scene when one of the contender is knocked to the ground there will be a long zoom out from the man on the floor coming back into the darkness of the room by as far as possible.

Song: To build a home - Cinematic Orchestra

Synopsis
  • Setting: Abandoned, rural, derelict building
  • Character: Young Female, scruffy, dirty white/tanned leotard
  • Mise en scene: relatively bright lighting, potentially a couple of spotlights
  • Props: bag which actress carries, ballet shoes/costume
As the video/track begins the female is introduced as being naked and vulnerable. She begins exploring the derelict area looking very timid and weak, the audience would see her feet walking and how dirty and cut they are. As the vocals are initiated in the soundtrack she comes across a room with a bag, with a dirty leotard and shoes laid on top, in the centre. She continues to investigate the bag and eventually puts on the leotard and shoes. As the beat and vocals kick in more she begins to dance and show signs of confidence. As the track progresses she gets more and more confident and eventually performs to her best ability. The message of the video would be that without the leotard the girl appears very vulnerable and timid whereas with it, she is confident and powerful, illustrating the importance of music and ballet in her life as for her it is a form of escapism.

At the start of the video the camera will focus only on the girls head-shoulders and also her feet. However as the video progresses full body shots will be used to show her performance as well as some continuous shots. The camera would also follow her movements considerably low to the ground and also move in a circular motion around her. As the performance comes to a close the pace of the editing does accordingly and she slows down and comes to a halt. She is exhausted and gradually undresses and begins to leave premises.
