Final Digipak/Advert Design Audience Feedback - Kieran Panchal 9652

As my group partner and I, both created multiple digipak and advert designs in order to create a range of designs which could be narrowed down to find the best design possible, that would be the final ancillary tasks to compliment the main music video task. To do this, we created an online poll using freeonlinesurveys.com, as can be seen in the post below, which we asked to 19 respondents within our target audience demographic.

The question below asks the audience to select the advert design (out of the 5 possible ideas) which they consider most effective. The results are as follows:

                                                                                       Design 4

The reasons for the audience's choice are as follows:

The next question asked the audience which digipak design they preferred. The responses are as follows:

Progression from Rough Cut to Final Cut - Kieran Panchal 9652

From scrutinising the rough cut that we produced, we found that there were many post-production based improvements that could be made in order to improve the music video's aesthetic and narrative. Whilst some of these improvements were instigated by comments from participants of our focus group, there were many that we decided upon as a partnership after re-watching our rough cut as well as additional cuts after this and finding areas for improvement. Below the main changes and the reasons for these changes are explained.

Firstly, we decided to artificially adjust the aspect ratio of our video in order to create the impression that the footage was filmed in widescreen (at approximately 1.85:1). We decided that this would be necessary in order to create a more cinematic feel to our music video, which we felt would aid in creating an immersive atmosphere, which was one of our main initial goals. We created this widescreen impression by implementing two black bars above and below the central image, as would be seen if watching a film shot with a cinema aspect ratio on a home video system for example.

Next, after considering feedback provided from our focus group, we considered it imperative that we carry out a colour grading and correction process. We did this in order to give the video a seamless feel, improving the flow, and making it fit together in its entirety, aiding to create the impression of a product as a whole rather than a series of individual shots or scenes. Furthermore, this gave us the opportunity to use colour to create mood and tone. For example, we desaturated much of the footage in order to give many shots a bleak and moody feel, this aided us in creating a desolate atmosphere increasing the sympathy that is felt for the character. We did this by using a variety of the colour correction tools within Premiere Pro, such as the Three-Way Colour Wheel, the Colour Balance Tool, the Shadows/Highlights tool and the Brightness and Contrast Effect.

Following this, we noticed that some of our footage was not particularly steady or stable, which not only was a distraction for those watching our product, but it also appeared to reduce the professionalism and credibility of the video. In addition, it reduced the smooth and sombre aesthetic that we were looking to create. We found that one way to reduce this was by using the Warp Stabiliser Effect. However, we had to utilise this cautiously, as it had the tendency to warp some footage disproportionately. In order to counter this, we had to choose clips that were not overly unsteady, and shots that showed a clear subject and background, so that any warping was not obvious.

Another area for improvement mentioned in the focus group was the use of static shots following handheld shots, particularly in the performance-based final scene. After reviewing this criticism, we found this to be true, and fixed shots appeared to be hindering the flow and energy of some sequences, which is what we wanted to capture, as the movement in this scene expressed the character's release and sense of relief. Rather than removing these shots from the edit as suggested, we decided that we would incorporate movement into the mentioned shots, making them fit in within the scene better. We used timescaled, progressive movements such as zooms and pans using the motion effects also found within the software.

After this, we attempted to create a smooth transition/distinction between the narrative and performance scenes, as we found that in our rough cut, the drum performance did not create the impact and surprise that we initially attempted to create. We considered the best way to do this was to simply cut to black, leaving a black screen for a few seconds as the music stops. We then cut straight back into the scene, at the same time as the music in order to create impact. Also to create impact and a feeling of a build in tension, we edited the pacing of the sequence prior to the emergence of the smoke. We did this by using a greater number of clips in the sequence each for shorter durations. We feel like this has improved the cut significantly, and increases the dramatic effect and suspense a great deal.

Focus Group - Rough Cut Audience Feedback - Kieran Panchal 9652 and Joshua Manley 9645

After producing a rough cut for our video, we decided to conduct a focus group. We figured that this would be a good opportunity to not only gain some feedback from our target audience, but also observe the reactions of an audience watching our product for the first time. We ensured to choose four participants who fit into the bracket of our target audience (we deduced this from observing the initial research questionnaires that we preliminarily carried out upon deciding upon the initial idea). Furthermore, we decided to show the audience our rough cut rather than waiting until the final product was complete, as this allowed us time to consider the feedback that we were given and then incorporate it it in our final cut if we felt necessary and appropriate. This proved to be a particularly worthwhile task as the feedback given was useful and the advice was almost entirely transferrable into our music video project. From carrying out this focus group the main points in terms of improving the piece are as follows:

  • Additional stabilisation is needed
  • A colour grade is needed
  • The pace of editing should be adjusted in order to fit the song's tempo
  • The drums should be more accurately synchronised to the soundtrack
  • More careful consideration of diegetic sounds needed (helicopter)
  • Improve shot decisions in order to ensure continuity throughout
  • Further consideration of the transition between the narrative and performance scenes needed
  • Consideration of the use of static shots next to shots that incorporate movement
We will try to amend each of these issues when improving our edit. In addition, we felt it was important to gauge some opinions regarding some positive aspects of our music video. This allowed us to consider whether we were on track to achieve what we desired, in particular, an immersive experience for the viewer. Our audience feedback so far suggests that we have achieved this.

Primary Research - Digipak Designs - Kieran Panchal 9652

After carrying out two digipak mock up designs, I decided to gain some quantitative and qualitative feedback through the use of an online survey platform 'freeonlinesurveys.com'. I decided to gain both quantitative and qualitative data as this would allow me to analyse statistically using graphical forms, whilst gaining opinionated responses that allowed me to constructively analyse my work ideas, based on the suggestions of others.

I distributed the weblink 'http://freeonlinesurveys.com/s/ZzsRaBrp' to 15 members of my previously established target audience. In this survey, I asked my respondents what their favourite of my digipak mock up designs were, and then asked for the reasons for their choice. The results that i gathered were as follows:

Design 1
Design 2

This shows that my target audience favoured my second digipak design. Votes were in favour of this design by 2:1, with 10 votes to 5. This proved to me that i should base my final ancillary digipak design on this photographic style of design rather than an illustrative style. The quantitative data that i gathered was as follows.

On the whole, this feedback provided me with the following point that will enable me to improve upon the development of my main ancillary digipak task. The main points concluded were:

  • Continuity across the digipak is preferred
  • Simplicity within the designs is preferred
  • Designs that continue on from the theme of the video production are preferred
  • Juxtaposition of two things that often are not associated is liked as it created enigma code
  • Natural tones are preferred, with faded overlays and little contrast
  • Central alignment of the track listing is preferred to left alignment
  • Photographic style is preferred to illustrative style

Primary Research For Ancillary Task - Poster Advert (Qualitative Data) - Kieran Panchal 9652

After creating three mock ups for my poster designs, i carried out some primary research in order to investigate the opinions of my target audience. The overall purpose of this was to discover which design should be used as a template for the main ancillary advert. I decided to conduct this research, setting out to receive qualitative rather than quantitative data in order to gain opinionated rather than statistical information, as i feel that that this would be more personal and would be easier to follow in the review stages of production. The majority of respondents were within the demographic that i am targeting, meaning that their responses would be most relevant. The results were as follows.

Isaac Randall
Favourite Design: Mock up 1

The design of the poster is very simplistic, yet reflects the theme of the music video well through the close up of the drumsticks on the drum. The colours used in the poster reflect the natural theme of the band (Sigur Ros) and the style of music that they produce. The poster, despite its simplicity, conveys all of the important information needed, such as the website, album name and release date. The poster is visually engaging without bombarding the audience with information about the band. I think that this works well and from an audience's point of view is the best as it best suits the band, in my opinion, capturing the artists true intentions when creating the album.

Luke Sams
Favourite Design: Mock Up 2

My favourite poster out of the three I have seen is this one. The reason I like this one, is due to the use of darkness in the image. It leads the audience asking questions as to what it means, and what it represents in the artist. The text is also bold, with the white making it stand out further, yet it has been positioned elegantly.

Nathan Rawlings
Favourite Design: Mock Up 1

Mock Up 1 is my preferred poster advert design. From hearing Kieran's shoot idea, I feel that this design reflects the mood and feel of the video and the song more so that the other designs, as the blood connotes aggression but also passion as it juxtaposed with drumsticks - an outlet for musical intensity. The piece includes all of the relevant information that would normally be found in a poster whilst maintaining a simplistic layout aesthetic. The colours used in the editing process are also effective, as they include contrasted, dark colours which reflect the video's ambient feel.

James Bell
Favourite Design: Mock Up 1

This is a dramatic poster which conforms to enigma code in that we are left asking the question why the blood stains on the drum sticks, I like the mid tone and griminess of the whole shot which is somewhat disturbing. I would try to work on the font and layout positioning of the main cover line June 2016… you might think of a font that compliments the griminess of the foreground image…  or a plain sans serif design … The font colour may also need adapting..   I think the black is too stark, it could be that you work in layers and create a bloody type of font????

Grace Cambridge
Favourite Design: Mock Up 2

I like the second design as it is the most simplistic design which allows the costumer to take in all the information without distraction. I like the way the background is slightly ambiguous and it makes the audience think. From the research that Kieran has carried out into Sigur Ros and 'Festival' this relates well to the theme, as it appears that the band often like their listeners to interpret their music in different ways. The black and white colour scheme is simple and effective.

Evaluation of Results

From observing the results of the respondents, I have discovered my first poster mock up to be the favoured. It appears that the audience like the way that the image has been carefully crafted and selected to reinforce the genre of the piece. The enigma of the designs also appeared to catch the attention of the respondents and they enjoyed the way in which they are left asking the question why. The audience also appeared to enjoy the minimalism of the posters, and the way it included the relevant information over an simplistic image. Due to the positive responses that i have received i will ensure to adopt this minimalistic and ambiguous approach in my final creation, utilising the dark and gritty colour scheme that i have experimented with in my mock ups. I have also found there to be criticisms of my mock ups which i will rectify in my final designs. For example the font choice has been mentioned to be inappropriate. I will ensure to rectify this in my final designs and will change to a sans serif typeface, to make the aesthetic slightly less aggressive and more rounded.

Research Report - Kieran Panchal 9652

My main reason for choosing to discount creating a trailer is because generally, the nature of trailers means that it will not allow to create a continuous narrative piece. As previously mentioned, my preferred method of video production involves creating emotional connections with the characters. From my research, i found that most trailers are edited in montage style in order to give a greater overview of the entire film. Doing this would not allow for me to create a sustained engagement with my audience, as there would be too much enigma code to make sense out of the narrative.

In my opinion producing a media text with the main purpose to persuade an audience, generally allows for less opportunity to create a narrative which would in turn create a strong emotional attachment with the audience. From my research of television advertisements, the majority of texts are not based around single, chronological narratives, but instead are montages, focussing primarily on pushing a product upon the audience, rather than telling a story to the audience. Although there are many types of adverts that do allow this, I feel that creating a plot-driven music video would give me more opportunity to connect with the audience, taking them on a journey through story-telling, creating a greater emotional reaction when my product is watched.

Primary Research

When carrying out my primary research, I ensured to gain both quantitative and qualitative data. I did this from receiving responses from approximately 40 respondents, focussing primarily on my target audience - 16-30 year olds of both genders. This primary research revealed a great deal of information about the direction in which i should take my product. As a part of my preliminary planning, I conducted a variety of primary research. One way that I did this was by creating a questionnaire as a means of finding out the preferences of my target audience. My questionnaire contained 14 questions, allowing me to obtain both qualitative and quantitative data, through the use of both open and closed questions. When conducting my research I ensured to ask 40 people, ensuring to focus mostly on my product’s target audience (both male and female 16-25 year olds).

The first question that I asked was the favourite music genre of the respondent. This was important for me, as the song choice is arguably the most important factor in a music video, as it provides the base of the whole product to work around. From analysing the results, I found that the most popular music genre was Indie/Alternative music, followed by ‘Other’. This coincided with my own music genre preference, helping me to narrow down my genre choice to ‘alternative’ and therefore enabling me to decide upon my song choice to Festival by Sigur Rós.

The sample that I asked when carrying out my questionnaire considered the location of the music video to be very important, with the majority of respondents suggesting that it is of 8/10 importance on the Likert scale. Due to this, we have decided to ensure that we prioritise the location of our shoot, and use a particularly unique setting. This means that I will have to pay particular attention to putting as much effort and observation as possible into the location scouting process. It is assumed that this will help to improve the experience of viewing for the audience, as it will help the escapist/fantasy aspect of the narrative come to life.

82% of my respondents consider listening to music an immersive experience. This means that they believe that watching a music video together with listening to a song is a stimulating experience. This coupled with 95% of respondents suggesting that a well-constructed music video can enhance the listening experience, means that it is particularly important for the music video to enhance the audio. This also means that generally people are appreciative of a well-constructed music video, and believe that the on-screen visuals and use of sound work together as one to create an intensified experience. From analysing these results, I will ensure to plan my video to compliment the audio as much as possible. I will most likely do this in post-production when editing the product, matching and timing the visuals to the sound as much as possible.

The response for the question was exceptionally insightful for me, as I was not yet decided upon a music video type to create prior to this research. The respondents of my questionnaire considered hybrid music video types to be of their preference, with over 20 respondents favouring this option. From this point, it was important for me to narrow down which music video types to combine within my hybrid. I then asked my respondents their opinions on including narrative and performance within music videos, concluding that 87% of respondents consider narrative elements important whilst 60% also favour performance aspects within video. Taking this into account, I decided to create my hybrid product from both performance and narrative video types, in order to
suit my audience’s content preferences.

This was an imperative question for me as some
of my initial ideas contained fairly explicit content, in the form nudity. I was fond the idea of experimenting with this as it would represent purity and give the impression of freedom. My audience feedback suggests that the vast majority of my viewers would feel comfortable consuming a music video product that would have explicit elements. Of course, this also suggests that there would be certain audience members who may feel uneasy at this prospect. As a result of this, I will ensure to keep the explicit content minimal and will not allow it to be dwelled upon.
